Warhammer Beastgrave: Grashak's Despoilers

It's Grashak's Despoilers from the new Beastgrave expansion for Warhammer Underworlds. These are painted following my standard beastmen formula. I did the skulls slightly differently, I didn't highlight all the way up to flat white.

I think my formula gives good simple results (and is relatively quick). I painted about 250 of these a few years ago using it. It's my 7th Beastman Shaman and my untold number of either Bestigor or Ungor (I think I have 50+ Bestigor, and probably around 70+ Ungor) ... so yeah ... I'm good on all of these models ... didn't really need any more. I still have one more chariot to finish (my 6th chariot ... now that I think about it).

I had an odd nostalgic feeling while painting them.

Eldritch Demon

"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn"

It's either the big guy himself (in Epic scale) or one of his offspring. It's a Reaper Bone's Eldritch Demon.

I like him, in a sanity destroying kinda way. Mostly done with washes and progressively lighter drybrushes (and a few spot highlights on warts and areas I wanted to look "blotchy"). He made up for the slow to paint Faceless Horror by being relatively speedy to paint.

He's painted using the same colors I used on the Deep Ones earlier.

Faceless Horror

Run! It's a ... what the heck is that thing?!?!?

Sometimes, I grab something on a whim. This time it's Reaper Bone's Faceless Horror. I believe this is supposed to be a Gibbering Mouther for D&D. I'm not sure if I've ever fought a Gibbering Mouther in D&D. I always assumed the Gibbering Mouther was a Shoggoth without all of the copyright/trademark issues.

I thought I'd crank this out pretty fast, but it took longer than I expected. All those teeth and eyes! Soooo many eyes. Although I'm fairly happy with how it turned out. It's pretty much how I pictured it in my head. I particularly like the half digested skeleton in it's gaping maw.

Rust Monster's Treasure

It's the "treasure" pile from the Nolzur's Marvelous Miniature's Rust Monster. One of these days I'll paint the Monster himself. This was some low hanging fruit I did while I waited for various washes to dry. Literally some Ironbreaker, followed by an Agrax Wash, followed by some Gold Highlights (and then I did the base like I always do).

Carrion Crawler

Part of my "classic" D&D monsters project, this time it's the Carrion Crawler. I was surprised by the lack of painted examples of this beast online. I ended up choosing a color scheme based off an albino giant grub worm I remember finding in a field (and being grossed out by) as a kid. I remember it being huge (like 4 inches long and an inch thick) ... but that could be my childish memory exaggerating. It was big enough that I remember it after all these years. Color-wise I tried to keep him to natural colors, with just a hint of blue. I thought about giving him some caterpillar markings, but in the end the albino grub motif won out.

Spiders

Eeek! Giant Spiders! Squish'Em!

Three Spiders from Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures. I was tempted to do each in a different color, but my desire for uniformity won out (it had nothing to do with me being lazy ... really!). I had this vague desire to be able to use them as Ice Spiders in Frostgrave, so they are a light colored spiders with icy blue eyes. Dawnstone base, Admin Grey drybrush, Wash Nuln Oil, Admin Grey drybrush and topped with a Pallid Wychflesh drybrush in select places. The eyes were black with dots of Caledor Sky Blue.

Speaking of Spiders, I recently chased a monster of one out of my basement (I put him in a box and tossed him into the backyard ... I couldn't bring myself to squish him). A good 4 inch long specimen, makes these three look tiny by comparison.

Phase Spider

It's a phase spider from Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures! I didn't plan to paint it like a phase spider, but I looked up some picture online and liked the overall color scheme. It's an odd miniature, in that much of the "good" detail is on the underside.

Xorn

Xorn! Another couple of miniatures from Nolzur's Marvelous Miniature line. I bought these on impulse, and must admit, I don't think I've ever met a Xorn while playing D&D. Now I have a reason to include them.
Painting these was a breeze. Undercoat: Dawnstone, Drybrush: Admin Grey, Wash: Nuln Oil, Drybrush: Admin Grey (again), Highlight: (Teeth) White, (Claws) Black. Base was the standard formula. Undercoat: (dirt) Mournfang Brown, (rocks) Admin Grey; wash: Agrax  and drybrush: Deathclaw or Admin. The eyes were Caldor Blue, Nuln Wash, and Lothern Blue highlights.

Stone Giant

I already have a Stone Giant, but he's a bit runty. He's the old style from the Reaper's Bone line. So when I saw the much larger one from Nolzur's Marvelous Miniature line, it looked more like what I think a Stone Giant should (even though I typically don't buy the Giants from this line).
The color's are the same as the previous Stone Giant, although it has much less detail than the Reaper Bones one.
I'm also not sure if it's male or female (not that it matters), it's got an androgynous look to it.

Shambling Mound

We played a D&D adventure that required a Shambling Mound. Such was my shame that I didn't already have one, I bought one. He was mostly drybrushed with various shades (from Nurgling Green to Admin Grey). Then I washed the whole thing with Bieltan Green and all the individual drybrushing seemed to disappear. I tried to recreate it using some spot drybrushing, but with only mixed success. I think it still looks good. A good alternative Swamp Thing.

Elk

It's an Elk from Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures line. The boy plays a Druid in our D&D campaign, and he often turns into a Giant Elk and charges things. The picture came out darker than the miniature actually is. Mainly a lot of browns ... a lot of browns.

Pillory

Another impulse purchase while looking for that stupid Beholder! This time it's some Nolzur's Marvelous Miniature's Pillories (I always thought they were called Stocks). Painted using the same method (and time) as the previous cannons. They should be a fun little "terrain" piece for battles taking place in the town square.

Cannons

I have a bunch of Pirates that I painted for GW's Legends of the High Seas games. I saw these (while looking for that elusive Beholder) and realized, I have no ship's cannons! How could I live with myself without ship cannons! I haven't played the game in forever ... but these seemed like they'd be fun to paint. Painted these in maybe 15-20 minutes.

Wood: Undercoat Mournfang Brown, drybrush Deathclaw, wash Agrax, light drybrush Admin Grey (to make the wood look slightly distressed/aged). Barrels/Metal bits: Undercoat Iron something something, rings: Gold something something, wash Agrax, highlight Iron & Gold again.

Owlbear

Run! It's an Owlbear!

I like this miniature, it's from Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures, and it was a breeze to paint. This is part of my Iconic D&D miniatures project. It's one of the 2 miniatures that kicked off the project (I really wanted to paint the Beholder and the Owlbear ... then when I couldn't find a Beholder, I kept buying other iconic D&D miniatures (like the Gelatenous Cube from earlier) whenever I stopped at the LGS searching for the Beholder).

Fur: undercoat Mournfang Brown, drybrush of Deathclaw Brown, wash Agrax, drybrush Deathclaw. Light fur/feathers/face: undercoat Zendri Dust, drybrush Ushabti Bone (let it go over the brown somewhat), drybrush Pallid Whychflesh (at the tips/center). Eyebrows: Rhinox Hide. Paws & Claw: Abbadon Black & highlight Eshin Grey. Beak: Averland Sunset, wash Reikland, edge Highlight Averland. Eyes: White, glaze Lamenters Yellow, Dot eyes with Black Micron pen.

That seems longer written out, took maybe a 1/2 hour total to paint (much of it was waiting for washes to dry), and I really like how it came out.

2019 September Totals

September wasn't a great month for painting, although I did do a lot of building. Made good progress on getting Warcry put together, and put together 2 Sylvaneth Wyldwoods (one old style and one new style). I'm hoping October will be more productive (and I can pass the 200 mark for the year!).

  • 4 Ylthari's Guardians
  • 3 Ironsoul's Condemners
  • 4 Lady Harrow's Mournflight
September Total: 11
2019 Totals: 180
