Warhammer Underworlds: Thorns of the Briar Queen

The first of the new Warhammer Underworlds war bands. It's the Thorns of the Briar Queen. I used Hexwraith Flames over Pallid Wych Flesh for the "white" parts and Eshin Grey, Nuln Oil and Dawnstone for the black robes. If I did these again, I'd do the skulls the same way I did the arms/lower robes.

Malign Sorcery: Purple Sun of Shyish

The last malign sorcery piece! Yoohoo! It's the biggest of them all, the Purple Sun of Shyish. For it's size, this is surprising easy to paint (mostly drybrushing and washing). When I picture the color scheme I used (dark purple highlighted threw bone up to a touch of lamenters yellow on the tips of the "rays"), I think it's way to garish, but when I see it in person I like it a lot more. This thing is so big that it didn't quite fit in the shelf I usually keep these things in and so had to paint it separately (and store it separately) than the other malign sorcery stuff (hence why it was the last to be painted).
Oddly enough, GW dropped the next set of endless spells on the same day I finished this thing.

Iconoclast Axe

This is probably my favorite objective from the Shattered Dominion Objective pack. It's a giant marble head with a magic axe stuck in it. Did someone kill a Stone Gole? Did some Chaos Lord just leave his axe in a convenient location? It was fun to paint and I think it looks good.

Nightvault Arcane Hazard: Broken Statue featuring an Icon of Nagash

After finishing this piece, I like it more than when I started. It's nothing particularly fancy, but it should look pretty on the Shadespire game board.

Nightvault Arcane Hazard: Throne

This is probably one of my least favorite Arcane Hazards. The seat isn't deep enough, the back of the throne is just weird (it looks like it was never finished). I guess all of the skulls embedded in the seat are kinda cool ... if you like sitting on that type of thing. It's a weird miniature.

Nightvault Arcane Hazard: Sinister Triangular Ruins

Not just pyramids ... sinister pyramids. I'm not sure why they are listed as Triangular Ruins. They aren't very ruined. In fact, they look very intact. I like these, but not sure what they are. Good window-dressing for a arcane dungeon.

Nightvault Arcane Hazard: A Pyre of Skulls

An Underworlds Arcane Hazards piece. It's call the Pyre of Skulls on GW's website. It's a cute little piece which will look good in any number of dungeons.

Columns and Grates

The small pieces from Blasted Hallowheart and the Azyrite Townscape. Now I just need to do the big walls and ruins.

Trove of Arcane Glory

A wizard's dream treasure. This is one of my favorite objectives. It was pretty easy to paint, and I think it looks fun. I'm not 100% sure why there's a globe, when AoS's setting literally indicates that each realm is flat. The writing was done with a black micron pen.

Ensorcelled Armoury

From the description on GW's website: "an impressive pile of shields, swords, hammers and axes." Yep, that's exactly what that is. Not sure what Chamber those Stormcast shields hail from, but that's how I painted them. It felt right at the time.
It looks good, and should be usable for a number of situations (both as objectives in AoS and D&D). I started from a brown basecoat, but it might have been a bit quicker to start by spray painting them with a leadbelcher base.

Treasure Chests

What could possibly be inside?
I painted the treasure chests from the Azyrite Townscape and Blasted Hallowheart separately from the wall pieces. They have more brown than gray, so they got a different basecoat. Also it made sense to paint them at the same time as the other "objective" based treasure chest pieces. I think I have 5 of these now. They're nice and easy/quick to paint.

The Realm’s Ransom

Wow, that's a lot of cash!
One of the objectives from the "Warhammer Age of Sigmar Shattered Dominion Objectives" set. This was pretty easy to paint and should look good on any tabletop.

Sigmarite Mausoleum

A Sigmarite Mausoleum. I completed it last month. I finally got a few pictures taken of the pieces. This isn't everything, just about 1/2 of the set. The whole set is actually 2 of the old Gardens of Morr, it should be enough terrain to cover about 2x3 feet of board.
I must admit to being a bit tired of painting white roses and skulls by the end of it all.
Mostly it was done using drybrushes, washes, followed by more drybrushing.
I think it came out pretty good. There are 30 pieces in totally. I kept the houses separate from the bases so I can lay them out separately to cover more area if I want.

Hallowed Tomb

This Age of Sigmar objective fits in well with the Mausoleum I recently painted. It's one of my favorite objectives. I painted it in the same "style" as the recent graveyard I did. I like him.

Nightvault Arcane Hazard: Triangular Ruins

Yep! That's the name GW gives these ... triangular ruins with smoke between. These are Arcane Hazards for Shadespire: Underworlds. Not sure why these triangles are leaking a green mist, but it can't be healthy.

Soul Stone

An Age of Sigmar objective, this is a floating rock that has been chained down. There are faces/skulls coming out of the rock. The pictures make this look darker than it actually is.

Nightvault Arcane Hazard: Creepers

So this thing doesn't have a very evocative name. From GW's website, it just says it's a set of creepers emerging from the cracked ground below.

Malign Sorcery: Ravenak’s Gnashing Jaws

Pac man!
This is one of my favorite Malign Sorcery bits. It's a huge (and I mean huge) pair of disembodied jaws that float across the battlefield eating whatever is in their way. I painted it with the same effects I used on all the other malign sorceries, except I added thinned down (using lahmia medium) lamenter yellow to the end of the magic energy effects. Not a lot else to say except ... chomp chomp chomp!

Malign Sorcery: Malevolent Maelstrom

It's a ball of ... no idea. It's got skulls in it and some sort of creepy mist/energy effect around it. I think it's supposed to be a bunch of soul-stuff you toss at your enemies ... maybe??? I painted it orange working up to yellow highlights with green mist. I was shooting for a skully fire ball effect. Whatever it is, it's malevolent ... that's for sure.

Malign Sorcery: Prismatic Palisade

It's a wall of scintillating colors, the Prismatic Palisade. I had originally planned on painting the colors horizontally instead of vertically, but a quick image search showed that it looked better with vertical bands. It's mostly a white base coat followed with various color washes to create the bands. A last drybrush of dead white to try to tie it all back together.
It's not a bad miniature, but I think it could be a bit taller, since it's supposed to be an impassable wall.

April 2019 Totals

April has gone better, but not quite better enough. I'd hoped to hit 50-60 miniatures this month (to get mostly caught up), but fell short of that goal. Let's look at what got done.

April Totals:

  • 30 Sigmarite Mausoleum Pieces
  • 3 Ravening Direflocks
  • 1 Scrapskuttle's Arachnacauldron
  • 1 Malevolent Moon
  • 1 Realmvault Key
  • 1 Frost Giant King
  • 1 Burning Head
  • 2 Geminids of Uhl-Ghysh
  • 1 Emerald Lifeswarm
  • 1 Scuttletide
  • 1 Doomblast Dirgehorn
  • 1 Mork’s Mighty Mushroom
  • 1 Suffocating Gravetide
  • 1 Wildfire Taurus

Total: 46
Total for the Year: 86

That's the lion share of the Malign Sorcery bits painted (only 4 left), as well as, the Sigmarite Mausoleum I started back in February. I still need to picture the Mausoleum. I should be at 120 miniatures for the year, so I'm down by 34. Still ... not too bad.
